SEO Marketing: Are Directories Obsolete?

While it may seem that using a directory is passé, don’t believe it. There are still a lot of opportunities for getting results using a directory. What you need to make sure of though, is that you choose your directory wisely. A reputable directory can still help you with rankings. Using your search engine optimization techniques with keyword phrases can be effective. If you can find a directory in search results you have a quality source. You should probably think about buying a link.
If you choose to become part of a directory don’t use too many at one time. A time span of months is a better option. Free directories have one thing going for them; they are free. Other than that, they really don’t promote your business that much.
Do not try to manipulate a search engine by using a directory. In the past this may have worked, but today’s search engines are smarter than they used to be. They pick up on content that is used over and over again. Don’t just copy and paste the same article from one directory to another.
You shouldn’t make your SEO submissions that are blatantly obvious. Combine your URL and your anchor using search engine optimization keywords. If you sell books and your URL is papyrus.com and your anchor is bookseller, try to combine the two into one. Try out papyrus books or papyrus bookseller. If there is a web site that has the same type of merchandise that you do, take a look at them just to see what they may be doing correctly or not so well.
Checking on the links for each category you could use is also important. One may have more than another, but it doesn’t necessarily mean it is better. If it has a positive inbound link even if the other outbound link is higher it could still work for your website.
If the directory you are looking at using has no real value to it then you have paid your money for nothing. All the search engine optimization techniques will not produce the desired results for your company. Don’t be tricked into using a less than quality directory. A good way to find out if the directory you are looking at is a good one is to watch the index page crawl dates. The longer the date the less it is deemed a quality directory by the search engines.
